BULB RECORDS

This page is for the releases Andrew did on Bulb Records. A brief history of Bulb (from Wikipedia):

"Bulb Records is a record label that was was started in mid 1992 under the tutelage of Peter Larson (now of the 2 piece metal rock band 25 Suaves), and James Magas (now known simply as Magas). The label was originally a vehicle for putting out records by local Michigan avant-garde musical acts, but expanded later to become well known and influential in the world of new music."

Andrew's affiliation with Bulb started started sometime in 1996, when Andrew met Pete Larson at a grocery store in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Sometime soon after this, Andrew took a film history course at his high school, Community High School, taught by Pete. Around this time, Andrew joined Pete's group "The Pterodactyls". Despite Andrew only being in the band for 2 weeks before being replaced by the original drummer, Steve Kenney (Andrew was late too much for Pete's class and Andrew's parents wouldn't let him play with the group), Andrew played drums on a few tracks on the first (and only) Dactyls CD, "Reborn", and also plays drums and synth on a Dactyls track that appears on the Bulb compilation "In Bulb-O-Phonic". Sometime during or after the Pterydactyls, Andrew was also in Pete's group "Music Band", which consisted of Andrew, Aaron Dilloway, Pete, and Pete's son, Miles. i'm not sure of Andrew's role in the band, but it has been confirmed he appears on the only 2 MB tracks released, "Dirt Lifter", which appeared on the "Blackjack / Bulb Split 2" 7" and "Me", which appeared on the "In Bulb-O-Phonic" CD.

Andrew seemingly dropped off of Bulb's radar after 1996 (because of Pete's leaving to Japan) until Pete's return in 1999. In 2000, Andrew did his first release as ANDREW W.K., a split EP with Wolf Eyes titled "Fortune Dove". Andrew produced this EP (which was released on 12" vinyl, later re-issued on the Bulb Singles Vol. 2 compilation), and the last track (which takes up one whole side) is by Andrew, and is pretty much a Wolf Eyes tribute track titled "Wolf Eyes Rules". You have to listen to fully understand...

01 Fortune Dove
02 Skull and Bone
03 My Recipe is Lust
04 Wolf Eyes Rules (What Kinda Band?)

On the 12", the Bulb Singles 2 CD (where these tracks are sourced from, for maximum quality), and all over the internet, it always says "Remix by Andrew W.K." by track 4....I wouldn't agree, the whole track is by Andrew, so he shouldn't ONLY be credited for a "remix".
Also, some copies had both sides listed as side A, and some copies acually had a side A and B, but with the labels on the wrong side! Oh Pete...

After Fortune Dove came the cornerstone Andrew W.K. release, and the first solo recording under the Andrew W.K. name, titled "AWKGOJ" (Andrew W.K. Girls Own Juice).

01 Girls Own Juice
02 Don't Ever Stop the Noise
03 We Want Fun
04 Music or Die
05 Make Sex
06 A.W.K. (Unlisted)

Every song on this EP except for Music or Die has been re-recorded or re-released. Girls Own Juice was re-worked and released on I Get Wet under the less provocative name "Girls Own Love". Don't Ever Stop the Noise was re-worked and released on The Wolf as "The Song". We Want Fun was re-recorded and released on the Jackass: The Movie soundtrack, and as a single. A version of the song (i'm not sure which) is also included on the Japanese version of I Get Wet. Make Sex was re-recorded and released on The Wolf and The Wolf version was also on the Party Hard single (although some people claim it is a verison different from this EP or The Wolf) and one version (i'm not sure which) was included on the Japanese edition of I Get Wet. A.W.K. was re-released on the singles for She Is Beautiful and We Want Fun, although those versions don't contain the 38 minutes of silence (since it was a hidden track) present on AWKGOJ. The SIB single version is what is for download here. If you are a completeist and want the 38 mintues of silence....go buy the CD.
Also, the song cuts off abruptly on both the single and the EP, so don't worry, it is normal.

This brings us to Andrew's final Bulb release, the incredible "Party Til You Puke" EP. In my opinion, this is the greatest AWK recording. It was the second and final release in the "Bulb DX" series. It's a crazy, totally dance-able EP. There was a 12" with shorter edits of some of the songs, and a rarer CD version with full versions of all the songs. There are 2 CD versions circulating, one is the standard Bulb version (most of which went to Japan) and the "Academy Records" version, with photocopied artwork. The Academy version was made by Bulb for some odd reason, i'm not sure why. Both CDs are identical. The title track was re-recorded for I Get Wet, but these versions will forever be my favorite. Dance Party is on The Wolf as "Long Live the Party", and sadly, I Want To Kill has never been seen anywhere else. And check out the Couch cover!
These are the CD versions of the songs.

01 Party Til You Puke
02 Party Til You Puke [Remix]
03 Party Til You Puke [Shout Out Remix]
04 Dance Party [Anti-Never Ending Music Mix]
05 I Want To Kill [Build-It-Up Club Mix]
06 Old Man
